Physical and Chemical Properties
Light Magnesium Oxide is a white, light, loose, and amorphous powder. It is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. Its bulk volume is approximately three times that of Heavy Magnesium Oxide. It readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide when exposed to air and is insoluble in water.
- Molecular Formula: MgO
- Molecular Weight: 40.03
- CAS No.: [1309-48-4]
- Assay: Contains not less than 96.5% of MgO, calculated on the ignited basis.
- [Description]: This product is a white or almost white powder. It is practically insoluble in water or ethanol, but soluble in dilute acids.
- [Identification]: The dilute hydrochloric acid solution of this product exhibits the identification reactions of magnesium salts (General Chapter 0301).
Industrial Applications
It is used in metallurgy, smelting, high-grade magnesium bricks, refractories, and thermal insulation materials. It is also widely used in:
- Polymer Industry: Rubber, rubber sheets, rubber products, plastic plate accelerators, plasticizers for glass fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), and as a filler/reinforcing agent for resins and flame retardants.
- Coatings & Paper: Surface coatings for silicon steel sheets, paints, and as a filler or reinforcing agent in paper production.
- Chemical Industry: Manufacturing of other magnesium compounds, catalysts, adhesives, and leather treatment agents.
- Miscellaneous: Steel ball polishing agents, insulating materials, oils, dyes, ceramics, desiccants, and soft ferrites.
I. Properties of Light Magnesium Oxide
Light Magnesium Oxide (MgO) is a white, odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic amorphous powder. It is slightly soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol, and soluble in acids or ammonium salt solutions. Its solubility in water increases with the concentration of CO2
.
- Melting Point: 2852°C
- Boiling Point: 3600°C
- Thermal Transformation: When ignited at temperatures above 1000°C, it transforms into crystals. Above 1500°C, it becomes dead-burned magnesium oxide or sintered magnesium oxide.
- Reactivity: It absorbs carbon dioxide and water from the air to form basic magnesium carbonate.
II. Main Uses
- Rubber & Adhesives: Used in rubber products and neoprene adhesives as an acid acceptor and accelerator. In neoprene, it aids in vulcanization cross-linking, acts as an anti-scorching agent, and performs resin chelation.
- Ceramics & Enamel: Acts to lower the sintering temperature.
- Fillers: Used as a filler in the manufacturing of grinding wheels and paints.
- Medicine: Used as an antacid and mild laxative to treat gastric hyperacidity, as well as gastric and duodenal ulcers.
- Food Processing: Used as a whitening agent or a decolorizing agent for sugar refining.
- Agriculture: Used as a fertilizer and animal feed additive. Magnesium is a key element in plant and animal metabolism; in dairy cows, it prevents neurological disorders caused by magnesium deficiency (grass tetany).
- Other Industries: Used in glass fiber, chemical reagents, electronics, insulation materials, petroleum additives, casting, and phenolic plastics.
Pharmacopoeia Testing Standards
- Heavy Metals: Take 0.50g of this product, add 10ml of dilute hydrochloric acid and 5ml of water. Heat to dissolve, boil for 1 minute, and let cool. Filter the solution, add 1 drop of phenolphthalein indicator, and add ammonia test solution (TS) until the solution turns light red. Add 2ml of acetate buffer (pH 3.5) and water to make 25ml. Dissolve 0.5g of ascorbic acid and test according to General Chapter 0821 (Method 1). After 5 minutes, compare the color; heavy metals must not exceed 20 parts per million (20 ppm).
- Arsenic Salts: Dissolve 0.50g of this product in 5ml of hydrochloric acid and 23ml of water. Test according to General Chapter 0822 (Method 1); it must comply with the limit (0.0004%).
- [Assay/Content Determination]: Weigh accurately 0.4g of the product and dissolve it in exactly 25ml of sulfuric acid titration solution (0.5 mol/L). Add 1 drop of methyl orange indicator and titrate with sodium hydroxide titration solution (1 mol/L). Perform a blank test for correction. Calculate the sulfuric acid consumed by MgO by subtracting the amount consumed by the calcium oxide (CaO) impurity.
- Equivalency: Each 1ml of sulfuric acid titration solution (0.5 mol/L) is equivalent to 20.15mg of MgO or 28.04mg of CaO.
- Category: Pharmaceutical excipient, filler, pH regulator, etc.
- Storage: Keep tightly sealed.
