Magnesium oxide index for biodiesel
Magnesium Oxide (MgO)
Allowable range: 0.01 – 0.06 weight percent (wt%)
Purpose
Neutralizes free fatty acids (FFA) in biodiesel.
Influence
Magnesium oxide exceeding the allowable range will increase the soap content and cause the fuel filter to become clogged.
Magnesium oxide below the allowable range can result in increased free fatty acid content, reduced fuel stability, and possible corrosion of engine components.
Test Methods
ASTM D6751 Standard test method for determination of magnesium oxide content in biodiesel.
Remark
The magnesium oxide in biodiesel can be adjusted by adding magnesium oxide powder or magnesium hydroxide solution.
Precise control of magnesium oxide content is critical to ensure biodiesel quality and engine performance.
