When we walk into a dental clinic preparing for denture restoration, orthodontic treatment, or crown and bridge work, the first thing the dentist usually does is not direct repair, but take a “dental impression.” Much like taking precise measurements before renovating a house, the dental impression serves as the “foundation” for fabricating various restorations. For patients with more sensitive oral mucosa, or for edentulous (complete tooth loss) impressions, zinc oxide-eugenol impression materials remain an exceptional choice. First, they are non-irritating to the mucosa and even offer mild soothing and analgesic effects (thanks to the eugenol component). Second, this material is relatively low in cost and offers high cost-effectiveness. Most importantly, due to the inclusion of components like magnesium oxide, the material achieves a perfect balance among hardness, fluidity, and dimensional stability, making it particularly suitable as a “final impression” material for denture fabrication.

Although magnesium oxide often does not occupy the largest volume ratio in the formulation, its purity, particle size, and reactivity directly determine the success or failure of the impression material. If the purity of the magnesium oxide is insufficient, the solidified impression may become brittle and fragile; if the particles are too large, the surface of the impression will be rough, failing to precisely replicate the fine textures of the teeth, which would result in the final denture failing to fit or causing pressure pain.
