Effect of ether on the preparation of ultrafine magnesium hydroxide

The effect of ether on the preparation of ultrafine magnesium hydroxide was studied by direct precipitation method with magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2-6H2O) and industrial ammonia (NH3-H2O) as the main raw materials at room temperature, and the morphology, crystal structure and thermal behavior of the products were characterized by high voltage transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).

The results showed that: when ether was added to the mother liquor and its mass fraction was 80%, the filtration and drying time of the products were reduced by 96% and 75%, respectively, compared with those before the addition, and the NH4Cl-MgCl2-6H2O impurities were effectively suppressed, and the well-dispersed round flake magnesium hydroxide powder was produced; when stearic acid was added to the ether-water system and its content was 1.2% of the mass of MgCl2- 6H2O, the product completely changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, and its morphology completely changed from hexagonal flake to needle-like.
