What can magnesium oxide be used for?
Magnesium oxide is used in the Rubber and Plastic applications as an acid scavenger, scorch retarder or curing agent during the cross linking of several rubber compounds containing halogens or nitrile groups. Magnesium oxide is also used as a thickening agent for sheet and bulk molding compounds, as a hardening agent during phenolic resin curing, and as raw material for hydrotalcites to be used as acid scavenging additives in PVC and polyolefins. (Magnesium oxide for Rubber and Plastic)
Naturally produced MgO can be used in a certain spectrum of these applications where top-end, costly, higher activity synthetic grades (S.S.A. > 100 m2/g) are not required.
Light active magnesium oxide with 90-99% basic substance content is used as vulcanization activator for rubber, filler and reinforcing material in rubber compounds.
In industrial rubber goods production magnesium oxide is added to crude rubber compound when vulcanized together with metal parts during vulcanization of chloroprene rubbers.
What is the function of magnesium oxide for Rubber and Plastic?
The main function of adding magnesium oxide in rubber and other polymers is neutralization of trace levels of hydrogen chloride, which can be released during processing, vulcanization and thermal aging or maintenance. HCI removal prevents autocatalytic polymer degradation and therefore maintains better stability.
Produced according to the required figures in regard to particle size, surface area, porosity and dispersion characteristics magnesium oxide reduces main raw stock losses and increases homogeneity of rubber and polymer blends.
Magnesium hydroxide is used practically for all types of plastics and filled copolymer compositions based on PVC, PA PS, PP, PE, PET, EVA IPM etc. as a highly non-toxic, inorganic flame retardant, filler and smoke suppressive additive.
Elas magnesium oxide powders deliver the precise predictability needed in rubber manufacturing. The key to successful rubber and plastics compounding is the accurate timing of activity – the property that regulates the rate at which magnesium oxide accepts by-products.
Manufactured to precise specifications in size, surface area, porosity and dispersion characteristics, Elastomag magnesium oxide products eliminate unnecessary cycle changes, reduce stock losses, and help maintain control over product consistency.
Consistent compounding times ensures accurate reproducibility with each production run.
