Light magnesium oxide and heavy magnesium oxide

Magnesium oxide is a chemical raw material, usually used as a flame retardant. It is widely used in industry and can also be used in medicine. It can generally be divided into light magnesium oxide and heavy magnesium oxide. Of course, the usage and purpose of these two are different, so you should pay attention when using them. So what are the differences?

1. Different volume

The most intuitive difference between light magnesium oxide and heavy magnesium oxide is the volume. Light magnesium oxide has a large volume and is an odorless, tasteless and non-toxic white amorphous powder. It is odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. Heavy magnesium oxide is small in volume and looks like a white or yellow powder. Its volume is about half or even one-third of that of light magnesium oxide.

2. Different production processes

Light magnesium oxide is generally made of magnesium chloride and ammonia or magnesium chloride and sodium hydroxide as raw materials to form magnesium hydroxide, which is then calcined into magnesium oxide. The finished product has a very low density. Heavy magnesium oxide is generally made by directly calcining magnesite or brucite. Due to different raw materials and production processes, the market price of light magnesium oxide is higher than that of heavy magnesium oxide.

3. Different application industries

Light magnesium oxide acts as a vulcanization accelerator, acid absorber, scorch prevention, and anti-aging in rubber products. It acts as a catalyst carrier in electronic ceramics and acts as a stabilizer when mixed with various raw materials. It is used as a raw material for preparing ceramics, enamel, refractory crucibles and refractory bricks. It is also used as a polishing agent, adhesive and paper filler. It is also used as an accelerator and activator for chloroprene rubber and fluororubber. In the cable industry, it acts as a scorch retarder, filler, high temperature resistance, fire retardant, and has a certain effect on the tensile strength of cables. It is used as an antacid and laxative in medicine, and is used for gastric acid hyperacidity and duodenal ulcers. It is used as a catalyst and raw material for the manufacture of magnesium salts in the chemical industry, and is also used in the manufacture of glass, dyeing cakes, phenolic plastics, etc.

The purity of heavy magnesium oxide is relatively low. It can be used in the chemical industry and the construction industry. It is used to make brake pads, magnetic materials, desulfurization, sewage treatment, etc.
