Transparent lightweight magnesium carbonate properties and applications

As people in today’s society are increasingly calling for light-colored rubber, transparent light magnesium carbonate, as one of the important additives, also plays an increasingly important role. Transparent light magnesium carbonate, with a chemical formula of 4MgCO3•Mg(OH)2•4H2O and a relative molecular weight of 467.64, is a white amorphous powder.

Magnesium Carbonate Light Powder

Transparent light magnesium carbonate has some unique physical and chemical properties. It is slightly soluble in water, and the solution is weakly alkaline, but it is easily soluble in dilute acid, and it will produce bubbles when it encounters acid, decompose and release carbon dioxide.

Transparent light magnesium carbonate, with a chemical formula of 4MgCO3·Mg(OH)2·4H2O, is a white amorphous powder with the following characteristics:

Physical properties

◦ Low density, loose and light, with a bulk density of 0.2-0.3g/cm³.

◦ Fine particle size, with an average particle size of 1-5μm.

◦ Good dispersibility and filling properties.

◦ High refractive index of 1.68-1.72.

◦ Good wear resistance.

◦ Chemical properties

◦ Slightly soluble in water, weakly alkaline.

◦ Easily soluble in dilute acid, foaming and decomposing in acid to release carbon dioxide.

◦ Decompose water and carbon dioxide to form magnesium oxide when heated to above 300°C.

Production method

Transparent light magnesium carbonate is made of hydromagnesite and carbonized by a special process. The performance of basic magnesium carbonate used as a transparent rubber filler depends on the chemical purity, the difficulty of processing when combined with rubber, the color and transparency of the vulcanized rubber when combined, and the enhancement effect. These characteristics are often dominated by the physical properties of magnesium carbonate, such as particle size, pseudo-specific gravity, content converted into magnesium oxide, degree of development of crystal structure, and refractive index. These physical properties are limited by the crystallization characteristics and shape of magnesium carbonate before conversion. Our special process has become an indispensable condition for manufacturing excellent rubber fillers.

Applications

Transparent light magnesium carbonate is mainly used as a filler and reinforcing agent for transparent or light-colored rubber products. When it is mixed with rubber, it will hardly change the refractive index of the rubber itself, while significantly improving the wear resistance, flexural resistance and tensile strength of the rubber. In addition, it is often used as an additive in the fields of paints, inks and coatings, and is widely used in many industries such as medicine, food, and cosmetics, showing its wide application prospects and huge market potential.
