Applications of Magnesium Oxide in Cosmetics

Magnesium oxide (MgO) also has various applications in cosmetics and personal care products, mainly due to its physical and chemical properties such as good adsorption, mild alkalinity, and low skin irritation.

Cosmetics
  1. Oil Absorbent and Oil Control Ingredient
Magnesium oxide has excellent adsorption properties and can absorb excess oil on the skin surface. Therefore, it is often used in makeup products such as foundations and setting powders to help control skin oiliness and keep makeup long-lasting and non-transferring.
  2. Anti-caking Agent
In powdered cosmetics, such as eyeshadows and blushes, magnesium oxide can prevent products from clumping, ensuring they are easy to apply and have a uniform texture. It helps improve the fluidity and dispersibility of the product, resulting in a better user experience.
  3. pH Adjuster
Magnesium oxide is a weakly alkaline substance and can be used as a pH adjuster in certain acidic environments to maintain the stability of cosmetic formulations and prevent adverse reactions caused by pH fluctuations.
  4. Opacifying Agent and Sunscreen Component
Although magnesium oxide is not the most commonly used sunscreen agent, it does reflect ultraviolet light. Therefore, it is sometimes used together with other sunscreen ingredients to provide additional protection.
  5. Soothing and Protecting Skin
Magnesium oxide has a certain soothing effect on sensitive skin and can help reduce skin irritation and inflammation. In addition, it can form a protective film, isolating the skin from the effects of external pollutants.
  6. Thickener or Structural Enhancer
In some creams and gels, magnesium oxide can be used as a thickener, helping to adjust the viscosity and texture of the product, making it more stable and easy to apply.
  7. Safety and Regulations
Magnesium oxide, as a cosmetic ingredient, is considered safe in most countries and regions and is subject to corresponding regulatory management. For example, in the European Union, Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products regulates the use of magnesium oxide. In China, according to the Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics, magnesium oxide is also permitted for use in cosmetics. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also recognizes magnesium oxide as one of the safe cosmetic ingredients.
