The application of active magnesium oxide in composite materials

In the production process of SMC (sheet molding compound), thickeners play an indispensable role. This special additive can transform the SMC with low viscosity and easy glass fiber impregnation into a high viscosity and non-sticky form, thus meeting the subsequent processing requirements. Among them, active magnesium oxide is a commonly used thickener. Although the dosage is small, its effect is extremely significant. Each manufacturer will adjust the addition ratio according to the different uses of the product, but generally speaking, the stability of the activity value of active magnesium oxide is crucial to ensure product quality.

SMC composite material, the full name of which is Sheet Molding Compound, its main raw materials include GF (special yarn), UP (unsaturated resin), low shrinkage additives, MD (filler) and various additives. This material has many advantages, such as waterproof and moisture-proof, high specific strength, good toughness, not easy to deform, and its service life can theoretically be up to more than 30 years. These thickeners are usually added to the kneader together with the filler powder during the production process. The recommended thickener dosage is 1.0-1.2phr. However, it is worth noting that during the plum rain season, due to the high humidity, filler powder, glass fiber surface and Ca(OH)2 powder are easy to absorb moisture, which may seriously affect the thickening effect. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent and control the influence of humidity.
